I'm thinking solo might've taken another dog-sitting job and doesn't have internet access.

I was just thinking how long it's been since we've heard from solo, hope she back to being connected again soon.

Robin, I'm totally with you on the noise thing. Gum-snapping should be illegal. As should dripping taps and upstairs neighbours who like to stomp around and yell at eachother at all hours.
Working in a vet clinic you'd think I be irritated by the dogs barking all the time but most of the time I don't hear it. Often people will come in and say 'Oh listen to all that barking' and I have to stop for a second and listen. Some of them are impossible to tune out though, the yappy ones and the howlers are the worst.

Yes, Dragon, that's what I mean about how some noises don't bother me at all, but the ones that do make me want to crawl right out of my skin. They cause a sort of severe anxiety for me or something. When I worked at the vet all those years ago, the dogs barking didn't really bother me either unless it was of the high-pitched variety. But a screetching bird was unbearable.

I did my practicum in a bird hospital. While I was there they had an African Grey parrot boarding. He would mimic a dripping faucet quite convincingly and he learned to mimic the sound that our phones made when they were on hold. I was constantly hearing that noise and wondering if I'd left someone on hold and forgotten or if it was the bird.

Time for sleep but before the sleep fairies carry me away ... ah Robin, thanks for venting. Now it's my turn! But before I go on with my silly story, doesn't Robin's city have nuisance animal ordinances? Our city has them and from all appearances it will not be long before I put one to use and file a complaint.

Here's the silly story. We got new neighbors, next door, last month. The best we can figure there are about six children ages 18 months to seventeen, plus five to six adults living in a tiny three bedroom home with an unfinished basement. These are an odd assortment of folk the likes of which have been foreign to this neighborhood until now. To give you an example, marius was in the yard last week and met the five year old. Whilst making introductions over the fence, their black yappy dog was going ballistic over who knows what, but the dog is always ballistic over something. It is mind-numbing, ear-splitting and heart-stopping noise.

I said to the five year old, "You need to take your dog inside. It is making too much noise." The kid ignored this so I said, "You need to quiet your dog. It is giving me a head ache." The kid began screaming at the top of his lungs, "Barney, shut the f--- up! Shut the f--- up! This was repeated who knows how many times and a very shocked marius said "Well now, James, YOU are the one giving me a headache. See ya." And I left. [Note: the other five year old in the other adjoining yard looked positively dumbfounded to be hearing the string of profanities - and there were more than I related. I smiled at *that* kid, he's a very neat little five year old, and he turned around and went inside his home too.]

Marius has already been to the new neighbors home to welcome them with home-baked cookies, then a week later to tell them they need to take their dog inside when it yaps too much. Then, a few days later to repeat the same message. There have been numerous times in the past month when the dog has yapped too much, especially when we take our cats out. All the nice neighbors are bothered by the black yapping dog too, so it's not just me ... and THEN, today... grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr!

The dog had been yapping nearly thirty minutes non-stop. Yes, you'd think I'd put a stop to it before it went on so long ... but that is the odd thing about noises and me. Sometime I get irritated and don't know right off that it is a noise (or a light) or whatever that is causing the irritation. That was how it went this morning; I knew something was bugging me but didn't know what and then it hit me: the yapping was so loud you could hear it in any room in our home, windows closed and music or TV turned on. Finally, put on the down jacket and walked across the yard. No one answered the door but could hear the other yappy dog inside and of course, the yappy one outside. I heard a car door behind me. Yep - had forgotten, a bunch of these neighbors go outside to smoke in their cars.

Introduced myself, explained the dog needed to go inside and Charlie replied, "It's my sisters dog." Uh-huh, like that explains anything. There was no apology, no 'I'm sorry our dog is yapping,' ... no, there was nothing like that. I told Charlie how much we endeavor to get along with our neighbors and how we hope if he ever needs to talk to us about something that he will, but in the meanwhile I want him to know that I've chosen to speak to him about his dog before taking the problem elsewhere. Said we do not appreciate them letting the dog out the front door in the mornings so it can come and poop in our yard (for some reason Charlie seemed irritated to know that was happening) ... said there are nuisance animal ordinances in our city and that his animal qualifies as being a nuisance animal when left in the yard to bark more than five minutes. I was VERY nice, ... then came inside and noted I was getting a head ache. Yes, noise can bring on head aches and so can stifling the desire to pour gasoline on what is probably already a powder-keg situation.

So, steaming at total lack of manners by some human beings, I thought to play a word twist game, one of those where you have six letters and make words from them. Mindless, but it relaxes. The first word that came up was ... I kid you not ... was "vicets" or ... E-V-I-C-T-S! I could not stop laughing. When spouse came home I shared the adventures and the EVICTS story. He laughed too. We have made a bet on when we think eviction will happen. Afterall, it is a rental home and one of our neighbors knows the landlord. Baldur asked what gifts we want. Well, I know exactly what I want for Christmas. Think I know what Robin wants too! : )

Goodnight all!

PS Robin, love your new pic. Did not see the word until just now! Wow!
Dragon, would that parrot mimic a yappy dog? Just wondering.

Marius, you ave my sympathies with the nuisance dog, and moreso with the nuisance neighbors. Our homes should be peaceful and our neighborhoods harmonious and it's really horrible when both of those things are disrupted by one lousy neighbor. Been there, done that. Remind me and I will tell you a story someday abou tthe neighbor from hell.

On the bird topic...the vet I worked for years ago was the only vet in town who specialized in birds. We ended up with a "donated" Cockatoo (you know, the big white Baretta birds?) who learned to imitate barking dogs, mewing cats, doorbells, and even "Shut up" which I confess I may have inadvertently taught him. So yes, Marius, those birds DO imitate yapping dogs. But they are much meaner and messier than any dog I've ever seen!

marius, here's a link to a site with dog bark control. I've put the link for a particular product which is humane and which you can use yourself without your neighbours even knowing. It's a little birdhouse, inside it has an ultrasonic sound emiter which is triggered by the sound of barking. Dogs don't like this sound but it doesn't hurt them. They learn (depending on the intelligence of the dog) that the irritating sound goes off when they bark and so they stop yapping. The best part is that it humans can't hear it and they've disguised it as something pretty someone might just have in their yard.

hehehe Baldur! The first time marius went to talk to neighbors, spouse was visiting neighbor Dave and saw me going to the dreaded place. When spouse came home, he said, "WHAT did you do?" I told him the old lady who answered the door kept repeating, "It's my daughter's dog." Finally I realized that not only had the dog's yapping killed some of MY brain cells, it had killed many of the old lady's too! So I started repeating, "Thank you for bringing the dog in! I sure appreciate that you are bringing the dog in." She did.

Spouse said, "Glad you handled it cause I was telling Dave I planned to spend the rest of the afternoon on the roof, you know - just doing a little target pratice."
I said, "But we don't have any guns!"
Spouse replied, "We were about to get some."

Tee hee - I will alert him now to get tasers instead. Would Baldur and Robin like to stop by, any afternoon around 2? I'll serve tea and home baked scones ... and you can use our tasers to your hearts desire! Then, if you'd like, you could visit Robin and fix that rooster for her. : )

Seriously now, Dragon - thanks for the heads up about sneaky ways to stop dogs from barking. Will ponder that. And for some reason this has led me back to something I've wondered forever. Do dogs and cats ever have mental illness and/or mental retardation? It would make sense that they might. I ask because have known a few incredibly stupid, yet adorable dogs, and a couple of cats that did not seem to be in their right mind, not ever!

375. 8 Dec 2009 15:45

Dragon

Well, there certainly are some breeds that are just plain stupid, and others that are incredibly hard to train, though usually the latter are because they're very smart and stubborn and know what they can get away with. There are defintely dogs and cats with neuroses. I've met many a dog with separation anxiety and whatnot. These problems can often be fixed with special training and sometimes medications. My own bratty cat is on a behaviour modifier occasionally for what I call his excessive personality disorder (though that's just my name for his issues).
The only time I've seen a specific "mental retardation" was a cat that wound up with brain damage after anesthetic, that was a sad case. It was a freak reaction to the anesthetic, one of those 1 in a million sort of things that can happen, we ended up having to euthanize it. Fortunatly it's incredibly rare, in 10 years at the clinic we've used anesthetic almost every day I've been there and that's the only time I've ever seen such a reaction.
