Though I sew (badly) I don't know much about the names of fabrics other than simple broadcloth so I can't help out much there but I do have one thing to contribute. Up here we have a very popular chain of fabric stores called Fanny's Fabrics, I'm not sure if they are in the states too. When my mom's friend from England came for a visit she thought this was quite hilarious and scandelous and took pictures of the sign because she was sure her friends back home would never believe her without proof when she told them about "Fanny's Fabrics". Appearantly, as I'm sure our UK friends here can attest, the word Fanny is slang for intimate ladies parts. In Canada it usually refers to someone's backside though I'm pretty sure the store was meant to sound like someone's Aunt Fanny had opened up a fabric store. |

yeah, the Brits have a field day with our use of the term "fanny pack". My authorities (my much treasured milkmen, who used to come into my kitchen a couple mornings a week and actually make tea! ---er, and browbeat me into proper understanding of the culture) assured me 'fanny' was the FRONT part. |

Your milkmen buddies didn't deceive you, Q. In UK, 'fanny' is definitely the front part and 'pants' are underwear. |

As a kid, there was a restaurant near our house called "Fannie's". We kids always laughed at the sign in the front that said, "Parking in rear". |
