For a while i avoided using fruit, thinking it didn't have enough variety, use, etc. Fruit always takes me longer than say candy or flowers.
Shanley is right, a lot of the pieces have a shine to them- but that's ok, its more about how you layer them than what the individual pieces look like alone.
here are my 3 favorite fruit pictures that i have done.

Shrek has more shine than the others-the different apple pieces make shadow effects easy.

Yellow Roses in the rain is probably my favorite. bananas make neat roses.

Serenity River has the least 'shine' of the 3. lots of layering went into this one

hope that helped

Chinky

I noticed fruits is meant more for warm colored drawings, minus the blueberry.. red, orange, yellow, green, wait.. green isn't really considered a warm color.. but then it's mainly yellow green so ehhh. creating wrinkles is hard on fruit.. or at least the folded table cloth look.. Do-able with the grapes, apples and bananas/lemons, but definitely not cherries and rasberries... unless matthew proves me wrong. lol.

Arw...this is going to sound strange...I watched the replays on many of your drawings and sometimes I'm under the impression you have such a clear image in your mind of how you want them to look like, that they'd turn out just as good in any medium. For those who may believe I'm exagerating I suggest they watch the replay on havasupai. It's absolutely incredible...not to mention the fact that the drawing was made starting with the left corner.
Chinky, I was totally amazed you had chosen to work in the fruits medium the 'Graduation'. The face details and the numbers are amazing.
It's gonna take me some time and lots of practice to have some decent pics in fruits. Thank you both for your examples . Any other 'tehnical' comments about working with fruits are welcome and appreciated .

Matthew, you said something about deleting pics. Does TD limit the number of pictures one can publish here?

85. 10 Nov 2009 09:47

Dragon

As far as I know there's no limit on how many you can have in your gallery (Mekeys has thousands). Some artists like to keep all their pics and some like to clear them out every now and then. I will occasionally go through mine and delete any that I just don't think are up to par.

yes, you've been great and you've taught us lots and shown us lots. Thanks and happy anniversary.

Happy TD anniversary, Arw, and thanks for the gift to us -- your drawings here are a delight!

Re: posts # 69 & 71, this thread

Poking around searching for fake transparency tricks, I've found just one -- the bubble thing available in the lower lcorners.

(No offense, Baldur, not the eye, but your suggestion is what finally led me to it - I generally avoid Avatar palette)

As Baldur said tho, it's going to be difficult to work with. Those harsh dark edges surround it way too completely... we need either a bit that really sticks out, or at least 1/4 of a circle clear edged.

I played around with it yesterday and got the same result as Qsilv. There are two noses with a tiny bit of colour in them, but no transparency.

... just the bubbles, with the hard edge.

Shanley

I'm looking for some examples on perspective...especially for the viewed from top lanscapes. Suppose you are on top on one mountain/hill and see a valley and then some more hills/montains. How do you get such a perspective? I'd appreciate if somebody could remember such TD pics....or maybe try drawing something like this...

96. 23 Nov 2009 02:24

matthew

Ok...

Here ya go Shanley... I am on a mountain in this drawing...

matthew

And, correct me if I am wrong, but it appears that you used this angle of view in your profile pic...

98. 23 Nov 2009 04:21

Shanley

Thank you Matthew. I was actually thinking about this drawing of yours. It was the only one that came to my mind and no doubt you did get a great perspective. Might sound a bit childish, but I didn't mention it, because I was hopeing to see some more examples, especially some "randomly " colored ones. I know it sounds a bit strange, but I've noticed that mixing textures makes it harder to get a good perspective. This 'up-down' view is difficult. Wasted a couple of hours yeasterday trying to figure this out on fruits. More textures, harder to get the closer details right (as in your pic).
And about my profile pic...I used smaller elements with the purpose of getting some depth and distance, but I didn't intend to make it look as if the street is descending . The construction is an arched bridge, that's why it might have given you this impression.

99. 23 Nov 2009 04:35

Shanley

I guess what I'm trying to say is...I need some more examples to figure this out or at least maybe somebody could try to explain me what is it that I'm missing in your pic. What are the elements that make the perspective right. I know....it's hard to put this into words, maybe somebody will give it a try anyway. I think it would be helpful...

I usually shift perspective around as if I (and the viewer) are moving through the picture (to make pics more dynamic), but maybe these will help...

From above:

http://www.thinkdraw.com/picture.php?pictureId=35567

http://www.thinkdraw.com/picture.php?pictureId=47508

http://www.thinkdraw.com/picture.php?pictureId=44912

Aspects from above: (the perspective shifts in this one)

http://www.thinkdraw.com/picture.php?pictureId=31193

If you think of what you are drawing as being in three dimensional box, there's a front area, a middle area, and a back area -- or viewed from the top of the box, a top area, middle area, and bottom area -- and you are translating that to your two dimensional plane. (really, the box divides up to stacked planes that make up each area, but the three part idea works well for blocking areas) The size of things, the clarity of lines/marks (close color values make soft lines, sharp value contrasts make hard lines, etc -- what feels like you can walk around it or through it and progress through the picture and what blocks you -- different textures all have a line quality and color/value qualities within them, which is why they can interfere with your perspective efforts) determines which area the parts of the image anchor in or float in. Diagonals (drawn or implied) move between the areas, and horizontals or verticals of the exact same quality (same value, same color, same thickness, etc) sit where the they are. To stop a picture from being uninteresting, you usually have to add a small aspect that tends breaks the perspective -- and keeps the viewers eye in the picture, e.g. a bright spot in the distance pops the eye back.

Hope that helps. I posted this website .... http://www.guidancecom.com/alphabet/picplane.htm ... which along with the other aspects covered on that website gives good explanations of different attributes involved.
