lol... oh polenta!!!

chelydra's done right by you -- I remember when you first showed up in TD, I was absolutely stunned by your sense of strong pattern and enchanting color combinations! Still am!

At Shanley's encouragement...enjoy, critique, dissect, etc. Mild cubism, I don't know, but I like it.

Delightful to see all these new entries!

Doug, Since you too are saying you don't get it... Here are some mildly Mild Cubist samples from your own gallery. As I said to polenta, none are EXACTLY what I had in mind, but they'll do, and if this helps you get the idea, maybe you can whip up a couple of fresh ones... The common denominator is that all these contain some space, and like the classic examples (from Villon et al) there's something 'musical' in the ways you assembled the forms and colors...

Thanks chelydra, I must be a brain surgeon..lol. If I have time before your challenge expires I'll try to whip one up for you. It might have to be after the challenge though as I just found out that we are green to go for the house closing in two day! Yeah!!!!!

Doug

Sorry one more point.... I must say that this challenge of yours and the instructional value you have brought forth has really been a joy? Yes a joy. Are not challenges to be a challenge? Your's definately is and you have done more than your fair share of guiding the others on. Thanks!

chelydra's bridges feel solid, with grand mass and lovely details....

Mine (from over a year ago) are way more sketchy, but I'm not sure that that in itself limits their ability to fulfill the mild-cubist premise.

And if it's really about examining multiple perspectives, and emphasizing various geometric aspects of the structural elements of the subject, then it seems to me a decent argument could be made for using the TD bits rather coarsely (as opposed to hiding all but a few pixels of each bit) WHEN each one shows integrity in its position.

I'm still trying to come up with something original for this, but this challenge is REALLY challenging me. Abstract thinking and letting the picture go is so difficult for me. Did someone say control freak?

Just once, when I started "Mildly Amusing" I saw 'something' but then overworked it so that it was no longer abstract, just weird!

So frustrating, but I think I'm learning something! I can at least appreciate this style of art!! Thank you..

Full credit to all those here who have really got this! You have my whole-hearted admiration!

Chelydra's bridge channel Villon -- probably comes the closes to what he was after with his challenge -- but he can't pick himself as the challenge winner.

Good insight, Q. Even outside of TD, cubism tends to use marks rather coarsely while each mark shows integrity to its position -- high Cubism, included.

That said, my sense is that our liberalizing here as "mild cubism" seems generally to move away from fragmenting forms themselves into their multiple perspectives (as opposed to the relation of one form to another) and does away with figure & ground interpenetrating, both of which are hallmarks of cubism and both of which Chelydra's bridge moves back toward.

Here's my earlier bridge: http://www.thinkdraw.com/picture.php?pictureId=104116
