Take a look in Qsilv's gallery ... there are several examples of what you're referring to:

...and check out marg's gallery:

... and chelydra's:

I knew there was something special about the colours but hadn't worked out why, until now. There are more TD artists who use these colour combinations ... I'm delving further.

Every circle is a continuos cycle and is complementary to the next... Hoping that it works!

Polenta, your mother was quite right. The reason that the combination is not among those listed is that although green and brown go together very well (and in fashion, one might say that a green shirt and brown pants compliment one another) they are not complements in the sense of colour theory. In colour theory, the only complements are those across the colour wheel from one another (admittedly with a little sliding from side to side, as has been mentioned).

Interestingly, part of why green and brown work together so well is that brown is considered a neutral along with cream, white, black and the grey shades. To create a neutral other than white, one adds two complements. To generate a rich brown when painting, I might combine green and red, for example.

How true a neutral one can produce depends on the pigments used; sometimes the result is more of a mucky grey than anything else. This is part of why natural brown pigments like "burnt sienna" are so popular with artists.

Thanks methinks. I'm learning a lot. Like other people have said, I use colors without knowing what really goes with what. Some unconscious knowledge, some intuitive hand guides me. But it's like in the Garden of Eden.... once you know..... you can't go back.... LOL
Thanks methinks.

Thanks Mum23 for suggesting this challenge giving me a chance to learn a few things about color!

I know a bit about color but, honestly have never worked with creating anything in a complementay study.

I appreciate the fabulous artists here on TD and feel blessed to be in the company of their fantastic work. To me tips on techniques like this...are purely priceless!

Here are a few of my creations keeping the complementary colors in mind.

I'm just thrilled at the interest being shown in this subject... new pics, old pics and a wealth of information. Many thanks to all who have contributed.

Rosie, you've hit the nail on the head.... thank you to those who have shared their knowledge with us; we're all learning so much!

There have been great contributions so far... keep exploring and having fun with it and keep them all coming in!

Pumpkin girl,

You need to go to the picture that you want to enter and you will find at the top of your screen there will be an address for it.. such as.. http://www. etc...

This is the personal address of your picture. The easiest way I know is to click on (add reply) then in the "Add your comment" window put that complete address in. I like to use copy and paste for this.

Hope this helps... post a note here again if you have any problems

This all reminds me of being a little kid and playing with my basic pack of (?) 10 Crayolas. I was absolutely convinced that certain partnerships existed: blue & red, pink & purple, black & white, yellow & brown, and green & orange (based on carrots, probably).

I was utterly astonished to learn in High School about the color wheel. Then physics class wrecked my new understanding by telling me that color was divided into blue, green and red, which together formed white.

In recent years I've had fun equating color with musical tone, but am sorry to say all the triads form augmented chords, not especially pleasant to the ear.
