I think just about everyone on this site is an artist. Perhaps they don't do much in the outside world, but clearly there are a lot of very talented and creative people here and I think they deserve the title of artist even if they don't think of themselves that way. I've always loved to sketch though I haven't done much lately (life intrudes on the fun stuff) but being on this site really makes me want to do more sketching and drawing.

As you can see by my profile picture, my artistic abilities lack, but I enjoy thinkdraw and drawing pictures of dogs. ^_^ I hate using colors when I draw because you can't erase it.

Heather you can buy eraseable coloured pencils, I saw them in a shop this week and thought what a great idea!

I am an artist.

I don't do oils, except when I cook. I don't do water colors but am a huge fan. I do a little charcoal here and there but have never had a class in drawing or any "arts" for that matter not since the 7th grade anyway. I can’t play any music, except on the stereo. I don’t even take vacation photos.

My “Art” is in my eye, and sometimes, my mind’s eye. I have an artist’s eye but can’t, or more correctly, don’t pursue product. That is not to say I don’t do creative things. I make beautiful custom jewelry out of silver wire and beads and stones and shells and whatever else I see, I’m constantly redoing some part of my tiny (400square foot) apartment, I do precision haircutting and dabble in make-up, and various other “creative” things. But for me, my art is in how I think of the things I see. The way my mind goes first to the space of a room and the color and how it effects that space and my mood and how it “should” be and how that sofa is really not for this room and what were they thinking with those drapes? Before I can stop myself, I’ve redecorated the whole place (only in my mind of course), often before I’ve even greeted the other people in the room. I stop people when they’re shopping and suggest colors or styles; I’m talking about complete strangers. When I see a fabric or design that catches my eye, I touch it, even if it happens to be on someone’s person at the time, my girlfriend is always saying how I’m gonna end up shot one of these days. I once started following this six year old around a store so I could ask his mother about his hair and if I could please take a picture with my phone, I’d never seen the like in nature and never have been able to duplicate it on a head of hair, even though I have been trained in that.

I guess you could say that I’m a person who enjoys art, but only I know what my mind creates, and though you will likely never get to see the things I do, I am an artist.

Way back on page one of this particular topic Login made the comment regarding some of the early work in the Animal category, and I quote, "that made me recoil for a while, as weird creatures were cobbled together from spare animal parts." I had the rare honor of being first up on that one with my "Really Bad Sci-Fi" I just wanted to point out that I called it "Really Bad." I kinda agree with the recoiling there at first and I am truly impressed with the stuff coming out of that category now. Who knew?

Indeed, solosater, who would ever have guessed such immensely talented drawings would have come out of the 'animal' category (and of the minds of some very creative people). By the way, I wish I had your talent for 'redecotating' a room in my head ... it just doesn't happen for me.

Dragon, in a way you are right when you say we are all artists ... we all want to create something different and try to do just that. There are some who are incredibly talented, some who are fairly good and some who are on a steep learning curve. The point is, we all want to draw. I may be wrong but I think that when Ernie first asked the question "Who is an artist" she meant who earns their living by painting and / or drawing, etc.

I kinda think 'who knew' was likemee, who suggested (& presumably helped create) the Animals category in the first place --and is currently calling himself not an artist. pff.. (smiles)

The thing about the Animals category is that it offered subtle color blends beyond anything else, even flowers, and a richer library of edges to build from.

As for 'being' an artist... I love solosater's idea, expressed by others too, that it might really be best defined in how we view things.

Who do you mean by 'who knew'

Qsilv: I just hit your external link.

I wrote a long forum entry to Brandon about not quitting this site and about not worrying about awards. I told him to do art for arts sake.

One of the things I said to him was that he could make people laugh. And, in time, cry. And, in time, draw in their breath and gasp.

I'm a fan of American Idol. It's a dumb show but every season there is someone who sings so well that the hair on my neck stands up.

When I saw your picture I gasped and my neck tingled.

Now that's the very best compliment I could possibly come up with.

Unbelievable!

Matthew - "who knew" referenced comment #47, last two words by Solesatar --sorry 'bout being unclear on that (smiles)

Ron - um...

...thinking, a lonnnng speechless moment... mostly remembering a comment you'd made yourself at the very beginning... about our own family and friends generally not being all that interested...

AND *laughing quietly* it clearly consumes way too much of our time...

tho' to me, each thing I produce --whether it's a sketch tossed together or a 30-hour marathon-- is newly alive and way too precious...

so I try never to burden people with having to come up with compliments on my stuff

So............ thank you.

An artist is...

Someone who come sto TD, never draws any more and writes in the forums about making TD a better place!

(Please note the humor intended in this post )

I find that I'm better at drawing on paper then at thinkdraw. I like to play around on thinkdraw and try to make decent pictures but I'm not very good at it.

Puzzler, that's cool! I use colored pencils all the time, and you can erase them to a certain extent, but not as much as regular gray pencils. Thanks!

im better outside of thinkdraw

I find I'm mostly better with pencil and paper but there are a few things I've done on Think Draw I never would have attempted otherwise (or even would have thought of!)

Chinky

Reading these comments were quite interesting. (got bored and flipped through old posts lol) But in my opinion, anyone can be and is an artist, art is not depicted by how amazing it looks. A simple stick figure or the Mona Lisa, they're both considered art, the only difference is time. The stick figure took maybe three seconds to draw, compared to the x hours Leonardo took to paint the Mona Lisa. Being an artist doesn't mean creating a work of art that will wow people. Although, I do find it a little hard to call something I don't consider amazing, art.. but that's cause I'm into detailed artwork, hence all my TD drawings lol.

Thanks for reviving this thread, Chinky. It makes good reading. Going back in time, I agree with Qsilv ... Mike Lee (likemee) IS an artist. I know he is connected with the creation of Think Draw ... I just wish he would, now and again, give us more of his creations. I have learned from the professional artists on this site and I'm still learning ... and there are several more than are mentioned in this thread who I would call artists ... people who inspire me to look at things from another angle.

Me too. Thanks Chinky for reviving this thread. I'll read the comments later.
I don't consider myself an artist. As a4e4 said once.... it's more THINK than DRAW for me. It's more a puzzle than anything. Please TDers, let's speak about art, artists and the like again.
