One way that I think you might get a more accurate measure of the top five pictures would be for each person to be able to have a list of their "Top 5 favorites", excluding their own work. As the month goes on, we could have the freedom to change these around as new pics come in. Have a formula that assigns points based on the fact that your picture has been ranked in someone's top 5 and the position that it is ranked. At the end of the month everyone's top 5 would be locked in and the final top 5 would be ranked based on accumulated points. This would take the ammunition away from the blitzers and also help us rank our favorites. What do you think?

I'm not sure how you would do it with different categories, though. It's rare I would vote a gothic or face category into a top 5. I guess it would have to be split up by themes.

sounds horribly complicated - what's wrong with basing it on votes ?

I suppose it is complicated. That is why I posted for others to comment on it. Sometimes different ideas can spur better ones. To answer your question, there are a couple of reasons it would be good...

- One is that fact that someone goes around giving some of the better work 1 star votes, which knocks them down in the rankings.

- Also, I give lots of pictures 5-star votes, but some of them I wouldn't put in the top five (especially on one's where I see lots of improvement in their work).

- The above reason temps me not to rate some pictures that I think still deserve a 5 star vote. We all love the rating feedback.

- I don't mind a 1 star vote as long as it is an honest 1 star vote. But, as long as there is this "1 star blitzer" lurking about who never leaves any constructive critisism, there is always the suspicion that it was given with wrong motives.

- The topic had been discussed on a different thread, so there must be need for something different.

Anyway, those are my thoughts. Does anyone else have any ideas?

I think it's a pretty good idea.

Based on some of the other suggestions here - I hope the site introduces the ability to add people / pictures as favourites.

It doesn't mean you only have to have 5 favourites. But the Top 5 should definitely take into account not just ratings but also how many people have 'favourited' the picture.

Regardless of the Top 5 - I would just really like a gallery of my favourite pictures.

OK.. how about if you could vote one of these (and only one) :
Top 5
Really good
Like this pic

The Top 5 would then be all the pictures that had 10 or more 'Top 5' ratings, and if more than 5 qualified, the number of 'Really good' ratings (& possibly 'Like this pic') would be considered.

If someone doesn't like a pic, they can make a comment, but not drop the rating, and it would allow you to say a picture is great (e.g. encouraging improvement) without affecting your vote on which pictures are really outstanding.

What do you think ?

I think we should all dance naked under the stars, chanting oooravotacrapa till God shows us the error of our ways... Then we must sing praise to God & Rachel and our troubles will be over...

Matthew! I actually hate you! (Just kidding...) But I'm reading along in this thread (trying to catch up after an extended, and much needed break) and I get towards the end and I'm thinking "And may God show us the error of our ways. I am NOT kidding. Then I read your post. Would you please step out of my head and aloow me a moment of Matthew-free contemplation! Do you know how to reduce my taxes this year per chance?

marg, i like your idea a lot, but i think it complicates things a little too much.

the thing with the top 5 as it stands is all to do with the shift in how people are rating. these days most people seem to give 5 or nothing depending on whether they like it. this means that all the highest rated pictures have 100% record.

previously there were a number of users that had rated almost every picture as honestly as possible leaving only the very best for 5's. which meant by the end of the month there were few if any with 100% record.

i would think that the solution to this problem is for people to revert to that sort of process and not give out 5's as easily. this would mean that the highest rated pages wouldn't take 70 or so pages before the next highest rated pictures at an average just below 5.

the shame is that so many of us wish to show our encouragement to new users and our favourite artists, that we are not prepared to give them less than 5. certainly i am also in this category!

perhaps its time for a change?

I'm wholly in agreement with likemee. What he says about the voting is absolutely true. We want to give encouragement to newcomers so we are generous. When we were beginners ourselves we were being more honest with our ratings. Then, the "1 voter" got in the way and it all became too sensitive. Now, with most people voting 5 for the drawings that they like, anything less sticks out like a sore thumb and seems unkind.

It would be nice if people could create their own galleries of pictures, including their own and other people's pictures.

Then, others could rate the galleries, and we could have a TOP 5 GALLERIES. If a gallery is in top 5 for a month, it would have to wait some time (6 months? a year?) before being a top 5 gallery again.

There should be a master list of gallery lists, too, for ease of finding them.

Since the 1-5 scale isn't really working, just a simple recommend button, to vote for something, should be enough.

If we take away the ability to vote for our own work, All the pics with 1 vote would now have none... Now the highest rated would be a lot cleaner...

Just food for thought...

Many of us rarely vote for our own drawings. I don't understand how taking away that facility will help, matthew.

I was of the understanding that our own votes were not taken into account.

Ok... Give every pic a 1 vote by default... That way a pic gets one 5 vote... thier average is 3... a pic gets nine 5 votes & thier average is 4.6... as you can see, each vote of 5 will continue to raise your average & it eliminates the "perfect" overall score untill you have nearly 1000 perfect 5 votes... If you get that many without even a 4 vote... you deserve it...lol...

Bigger picture... Bill recieved twelve 5 votes... two 4's... a 3... and the default 1 vote... your average is now 4.5

......................... Joe gets nine 5 votes plus his default vote... average is 4.6

......................... Bob gets twenty eight 5 votes... and some idiot gives Joe's lovely pic a 1 vote just to be spiteful... his average is... 4.73

... So in conclution, Bill recieved a lot of five votes, but not everyone thought it was perfect & he recieved some honest 4 & 3's... He is rated lower than Joe who recieved a few less votes, but they were all perfect votes...
... What I love is that even though Bob was hit with a 1 vote... he will still be rated above the other two pics because of the number of 5 votes he recieved far out powered the 1 vote, because it is only the 1st one vote that hurts us... but if we all start with it, it can not hurt... can it...

The problem as I see it is that a lot of the best work is being given a 1 vote out of spite or jealously or whatever. Qsilv's awesone jolly roger flag dropped right to the bottom of the showcase from 2nd place. My suggestion would be one of 2 things:
!. Just have vote of no vote. If you don't like a picture, just ignore it and move on (or leave a comment)
2. Require a comment for a rating under 5. This would eliminate hit and run low scores.

I agree with a lot that's been said here, but some of the soultions seem very complicated. I think we should all vote honestly, a vote of 4 is still a very good vote, it just means there's room for improvement. I do think if you're going to give a 1 vote you really need to explain why. Perhaps if there was a log that recorded who gave the vote that would curb some of the spiteful 1 voting. If you knew that the person you voted badly for could tell you did it you'd think twice about it.

matthew, i think you have finally solved the problem. what you have proposed works in nearly every respect. the only downside would be to be starting from 1, but this wouldnt matter if it was applied accross the board.

the question would be whether the 1 vote counts as a vote (it could be 0).

also each of the 20 000 or so pictures currently in the gallery would have to be given a 1 (or 0) too. which would automatically present the 'highest rated' as the sort of gallery we'd expect.

i love the idea and i think it should be put to some kind of vote. or simply ask the great creator rachel, to put it into effect.

Maybe I'm a bit mathmatically challenged, but I don't see how giving everything a one starting off is going to solve anything. ??

So, likemee, what type of voting system do you propose ....He he.
