Well I am into my 4th day on the milk diet for my surgery and only 10 days to go before my hospital admission. Funnily enough I am not feeling hungry at this stage, I have had a couple of scares with hypoglycemia but careful adjustment and balance of insulin and tablets seems to control this. My Centrum advance multi-vitamins and minerals should help keep me healthy, and I look forward to a savory chicken stock drink in the evenings. Wonder how much I will lose during this diet?

you'll do fine. you will lose at least 80-100lbs or more the first year. some foods may make you nauseous. for me it was chicken and cherries. always check your blood sugars, as you know they can move fast. good luck to you steve. also enjoy your poetry!!

My sympathies to you, Steve, having to be 2 weeks on milk /liquid det. I am wondering why your choices are so limited? Seems that some fresh fruit juice would be beneficial...There's a reason that I had no interest in a health care career! It was not my calling. I wish you all the best as you soldier on through this ordeal. Keep your eyes on the prize!

I'll be thinking of you on the 29th Steve with positive thoughts. I was scared to death when I had to have surgery for cancer last year but I tried to stay positive and calm.....you'll be fine and this time next year you wil look back and think hey it's done and it's all good! Good Luck!

Thank you all for your well wishes, it is an honor to be a part of this exclusive community...and for me a very respectable forum. I might even use my new internet smartphone to keep tabs whilst I'm recovering in hospital. Shame they don't have WI-FI!

I have opinions similar to many expressed in this thread. Not religious, but not anti-religion either. I have a basic faith in humanity and believe there are many paths to goodness.

Good luck on your surgery, steve, and congrats on having the will to take care of yourself.

There has been a development, I got rushed to hospital yesterday with suspected stroke, but it turned out to be paralysis of the facial nerve caused by a virus. Called Bells Palsy it is a relatively rare affliction that is can affect diabetics. The medications I will have to take mean that I will not heal properly after surgery so it has had to be postponed until my Palsy has cleared. The paralysis has affected the whole right hand side of my face effectively paralysing the facial nerve...I cannot blink, smile on that side, taste or speak properly. But you know what it could be worse...this will hopefully clear up in a couple of months about 70% chance good odds. My operation is only deferred, I now know that the milk diet is a breeze. My eye-patch is relatively comfortable and I can still see out of the other eye fine. Half a smile is better than no smile and my family are wonderful and helpful. I am still blessed...

I'm glad to hear that it wasn't a stroke. I hope your palsy clears up nicely and your surgery goes well when you're able to get in for it. I believe (Steve probably knows better than I do) that most people who get Bells Palsy recover quite nicely with out any lingering effects, we'll be keeping our fingers crossed for a speedy recovery for you.

So sorry to hear about the Bell's Palsy. My Niece came down with that a few days before her wedding day. It eventually cleared up on it's own, and she is fine. I hope yours clears quickly. Take care! I am glad to hear you have family to support you.

Great to know that you're still counting your blessings, Steve.

A good friend of ours had this a few years ago too. He has made a full recovery, but I know that living with this for a while gave him a new insight into the challenges faced by people who look and speak 'differently'.

Stay positive and draw on the love and support of your family and friends (yep, that includes us on TD!) while you get through this. All the best!

So glad it was not the worse option! Speedy and happy healing. It is good to know now that you can handle the pre-surgical diet with minimal sweat. Best to you.

More good healing thoughts to you Steve! A friend of mine with the condition was helped by acupuncture..I am a believer in the benefits of acupuncture but I know it is not for everyone.

My very best wishes to you Steve - you are amazing to stay so positive and cheerful through all these tribulations, but take care with that minimal diet of yours - it's probably not meant to be followed for too long but just for a pre-op period. Keep us posted so we can all send our positive thoughts to you.
