We have a preserved one on the campus of IL State, because it once was a normal school! (Meaning it trained teachers - my mom and dad and most of mom's siblings.)This is wonderfully done.

 Beautiful pic.

I had my first 4 years of schooling in one of these, but the bell was not on top - it was on the teacher's desk. There was a 2-room cottage for the teacher, a barn (in case a horse brought you to school) and twin outhouses.

Normal school had trained most of our teachers but it was later changed to Teachers College.

my mother started out her long teaching career in a one-room schoolhouse with all ages in class... she was only 20 years old. I have part of the slate blackboard from the old Star School.

They were allowed to teach with far less training than now. My dad did 2 yrs at ISNU, then worked a year or 2 at a country school, then finished his last 2 years for a B.Ed. Likely a funds issue in the depression era.
