I have noticed over the months that I have been associated with Think Draw that only a few users actually seem to vote, for example there are currently 14200 people registered with TD, yet I struggle to reach 20 votes, no quips about the quality of my work please! Even people who create superb pictures, virtual masterpieces given the pieces used struggle to get into high numbers, so why is that?

There are only like 300 out of the 14200 that really go on TD to draw, the other 13900 are people who no longer go on or people who made the account for a day and never went back or people who Rarely go on. and only like 40 of the 300 actually comment and rate, and only about 15 of those 40 vote frequently, the other 25 are those who don't really scan the gallery so when by chance they do, your pic is probably on page 4 by now, and people usually just look at the first or second page, and some people may have higher standards for pics. If your pic stands out, you'll get your 20+ votes, if it blends with the other pics, then not so much. There's also the little following thing TD made, so that kind of keeps people away from the gallery too. You also have to take into account of past pictures that were made. Similar drawings don't usually get the spotlight, I've tested that lol. However, I did notice the chances of a person getting 20+ votes have increased.. 5 months ago, 20 votes was like getting 25-30 votes now. You can get 20 votes easily if you do a little research. Look at drawings that do get 20+ votes, find when drawings were posted that gets high ratings, look at the standards for each palette every month, etc.

Chinky, you are as good at figures as you are with your Think Draw pieces. Then.... what is your suggestion?

Suggestion about getting 20+ votes?

74. 17 May 2010 07:18

suggestion???
What's our goal? To get a Top 5? To get 20 votes?
To feel accomplished with our job?
Getting a lot of votes, let's say about 20 is no easy job. Getting a Top 5 for us simple lay people who haven't been touched by God's magic artistic wand is like walking 500 miles non-stop. LOL
So... what's left? Enjoying while we draw..... and if something turns out OK feel great..... at least for me.
YOUR PRODUCTION CHINKY IS GREAT. You'll still get 20+ votes thousands of times.

My goal is to beat the Hyori Lee pic, Lol, or to create the most life-like picture on TD that meets my satisfaction, and to improve my own creativity.

To get top 5, simply draw something that's different from everyone else's. Majority of the pictures we see are direct camera views or 2d views, or side views. When someone draws something from an interesting perspective, it makes people go Wow, that's interesting, cause they haven't seen it done on TD yet, or they rarely see it at all, like say, mum's -Free- drawing of the horse. For the 2D-looking pictures, they usually lack tones.
What's the difference between this house

and this one?
http://www.thinkdraw.com/picture.php?pictureId=104156

Another way to get Top 5 is to look at the best drawings for each week for each palette, There's always a palette or two that doesn't have high rated pictures. If you draw in that palette, you'll have a higher chance of making Top 5. Or submit your image at a certain time. You don't want to submit your image and let it get flushed away by all those three second avatar faces, or submit your drawing when rarely anyone is on, but who your intended audience is is important also. If your drawing is directly towards the kids, then post it when the kids are on, if it's for adults, then post it when the adults are on. My Pikachu drawing is intended for the little kids, cause they know who Pikachu is... lol. Drawing something that nobody has any idea what it is shuns it from making it to Top5.

To get 20 votes is pretty much the same as getting Top 5.
Another way, is to put great detail into your drawing (that's what I do, but that's cause I always draw in that manner) or draw something that makes the viewer want to keep looking. You don't want them to click on your image and go "oh that's cool" and then go look as someone else's, you want them to continue staring and be like "oh that's coo.. woah, i didn't see that; wow they put that in there too". However, this method requires lots of time and dedication, and patience lol. I sit down and draw for like 4-8 hours until I'm done, but that's only when I am copying an image.
Another method is to steal five and Qsilv's talent lol. I don't think I can ever draw something so amazing in such a short amount of time.

To feel accomplished with your job.. Ummm... Well, that's different for everyone, but I guess even after feeling satisfied with what you've drawn, you'll eventually become unsatisfied after not getting a lot of votes and/or comments...

What's left? Keep drawing! Keep learning. Study how other people approach drawings, and adapt that to your own way of drawing. Your drawings will progress as you go. Look at your own drawings, and see how they could improve, what could you have done to make them look more outstanding, what should you not have done that made them look less outstanding, etc. Maybe look back at one of your old drawings and take a piece of it out and try to draw that. Experiment, try new methods, be creative, etc.

Even though I get 20+ votes, I'm still a little unsatisfied with my work, because most of them are Copied drawings. My intentions are to create from my mind, but all I've really been doing is recreating a photograph. To create something original that looks just as amazing is what I strive for. The day I start being able to do that, is when I'll truly be satisfied. <- I guess you can say that would be my actual Goal. Lol.

I just want to better myself on TD, I don't have much else to do these days and I was always good at art, but I never went to art college, I have in the past produced posters for local stage amateur dramatics, and painted portraits of my family and Dover Castle, but I have never sold anything or had any training...it has always just been a hobby that occurred infrequently when I was in the mood, now I am 45 and I have found Think Draw thanks to Click on the BBC, I gave it a try and liked it, started to get to know some of the people on here and slowly became part of a community of TD artists. I hardly ever in the past received feedback that was supportive of my paintings, but here the feedback is positive and constructive, some of the people from all walks of life and geographically spread across the globe have seen and commented on my pictures...it is a very good feeling, I am hungry for votes because I have a competitive nature and I want people to say things like wow, excellent and so on, being able to express myself on here is a godsend, for a man who has very little regard for his abilities and himself...a godsend, thank you everyone!

Lol, that's funny, Your past is just like my present, but at this time for me, I'm trying to take as much art classes as possible while in school, but I'm finding that hard to do since the Art department is becoming even more limited due to budget cuts.. sigh. Your competitive nature is also the same as mine. I too like reading all those excellents and wow's and enjoy getting another vote on my drawings.

Ah... So much talking and no contribution to the collection, I should probably add some.
