I had just left my local pub, the White Toad, after yet another drinking session, and decided to be irresponsible and drive the car home, as I only lived around the corner. While driving home, in my state of slight intoxication, a random dolphin did appear in front of me, blocking my path on the road. I swerved to miss the dolphin and my car did spear straight into another oncoming vehicle. The other driver was clearly not impressed and rang the police to come and assess the situation.
Before long the police arrived, and asked me what I was doing that caused me to veer over to the other side of the road. I acted all aloof, and pretended I had no idea what they were inferring, and the rascal driver of the other car had crashed into me, causing me irreparable toothache in my lower jaw. Amazingly enough, the police did not believe this, nor did they believe the factual story about the random dolphin appearing in the road. And as a result of this, I will henceforth be restricted to travelling to and from the White Toad on foot, at least until the driving ban is over!

Oh, superb ! Talk about laughing out loud.. it all seemed so very plausible to me !! (and dolphins make a very nice change from pink elephants)

Thanks for the compliment KM. Now I've got to do something ... and it would have to be good to beat this lot. Marg, your's shows you have an interest in history.

Oh - I so, so cheat!

Here it is then. A Poem.

Let's call it...

Whimsy in two parts...

The last fish in the bay
And the last frog on the beach
The Dolphin Leaped
And the White Toad flipped

Proclamation:
Henceforth let it be known
Any rascal, aloof and irresponsible
Should cast a stinging spear
In random errant way

Let the dolphin scream
Like toothache in the night
And the White Toad’s venom
Place a tamper on your light

For the Dolphin sings
And the white witch listens
And the white witch
Stricken kisses the white toad’s lips

And a white prince wakens
And the white witch youthens
And the two then
Marry and a white princess born

The last fish in the bay
And the last frog on the beach
The Dolphin Leaped
And the White Toad flipped

Proclamation:
Henceforth let it be known
Any rascal, aloof and irresponsible
Should cast a stinging spear
In random errant way

Let the dolphin scream
Like toothache in the night
And the White Toad’s venom
Place a tamper on your light

For the Dolphin sings
And the white witch listens
And the white witch
Stricken kisses the white toad’s lips

And a white prince wakens
And the white witch youthens
And the two then
Marry and a white princess born

I was finished and it was only 100 words. So what to do? What to do?

Why - cheat of course. Always - always pretend it was your original intent.

Ok, I am not good with words so hopefully I did a decent job with this:

Dolphin leashed his dog Rascal so they could go for their walk. These walks were always random in nature as he usually walked somewhere different each time. Rather irresponsible with his sense of time, time would be sliced from his day like it was cut away with a spear. Henceforth he was rather seen as the aloof type who didn't have a care in the world.

Today though he had a toothache so he was going to take a known path in the woods so he could get back early. He unleashed his dog to run free as he knew he would never be far from his side. Dolphin always enjoyed nature so anything out of the usual was a great joy to be found. So when he saw something white hop in front of him he took notice. To his surprise it was a white albino toad. He bend down leaning on the back of his calfs and just watched the toad before he went after it to pick it up for a better look. It was totally white except for it's odd looking eyes and a yellow streak down one of it's legs. He was glad his dog was off on his own adventure for the dog would of been barking loudly scaring the toad even more. He talked to the frog like it was a friend before putting it down and off it went. Time had flew so he called Rascal. Dolphin was aware of his toothache again, he had almost not noticed it when he was, White Toad, as he had decided to name him. He would come back again to this place but he knew he probably would not see toad again. Like always nature had done it's thing, he felt good for taking the nature walk. This time though it was different he would always remember meeting WT. WT made him also think of his mother that was no longer with him, she would take him on such nature walks and had named him Dolphin for her love of dolphins. Actually it was his middle name his first name was John but everyone called him Dolphin. So when he took these walks he would always think of her but today toad made it extra special.

So he picked up his speed, he needed to get on the phone and make a call to his dentist.

It doesn't have to be 500 words does it, I didn't count but it has to be way under that?

I wrote, "he had almost not noticed it when he was, White Toad". I left out the word with.

I am so impressed with all of you for your heroic efforts! I can imagine the tales you tell! I knew you could do it. This should be a "spur of the moment" monthly thing for us! Imagine what it will do to our minds, stretching them to come up with stories with random words! Fun, I think. What do you think Ron. This is your baby. Not every week, it would get boring?

Marg, the idea mention was played at dinner tables and such. You start a story, as it goes around it's added to. You can imagine how the story gets twisted. For example to start: Mary cut her finger. By time the story comes back to you it's Mary lost her finger. Quite funny.

Oh, DMarcella.. this is just brilliant !

Forget whether you missed 'with' out, it doesn't stop anyone reading what you've written and understanding exactly what you're talking about.

You just drew this fantastic picture of a walk in the woods - Rascal, the dog, goes bounding off somewhere on his own interesting little adventures, and Dolphin takes time out to hunker down and look at the strange eyes and funny yellow streak down the leg of an albino toad that's happened to cross his path.

Doesn't surprise me he's thinking of his mother - she probably used to take him to the dentist, as well as on nature walks (I only started being scared of the dentist when my mother stopped taking me !).

Apart from that, you make the rest of us seem like we were just playing - how can you come up with an expression like 'time would be sliced from his day like it was cut away with a spear', and not think that you've got a great way with words ??

Just GREAT !

I feel amost abashed to make a second offering -

[don't think anyone actually got the meaning behind the first one (froogal = frugal = save, dolphin = dauphin)]

but, undeterred, and in the full knowledge that it's slightly over 200 words (poetic licence), please consider :

The White Toad

Was a toad of many colours -
Kept himself aloof from others –
Irresponsible and reckless
Supercilious and feckless
‘Til the day, that day last summer, when the toad jumped in the pail

On a whim – yes, quite by random –
He decided forth to venture
Fancy free and joyful hearted
From his native pond he parted
Could he know, that sunny morning, that his quest was doomed to fail ?

In one hand he clasped a reed stalk –
Sword ? or spear ? no one can tell –
But with this he slashed the flowers,
Decimated garden bowers,
Left a trail of devastation – damage on a major scale

In this pumped-up mood of valour
The toad then espied the bucket..
Up he leapt.. and hit the handle
Hard
And went out like a candle
Coming to, headache and toothache, leapt again and did not fail

See, within the Dulux whiteness
Something moving, thrashing, waving ?
Dolphin-like, a back emerges
Than a leg, then all submerges
At the last, one arm extended, manages to grasp the rail

Well, the groundsman sees the traces
That the rascal left behind..
Fetches spade and loudly mentions
What, henceforth, are his intentions..
And the toad, at first just ghostly
Turns a whiter shade of pale

Sorry, KM.. got a bit carried away there.. are you sure you don't mean 'Chinese Whispers' ?

34. 1 Apr 2009 06:24

What are "Chinese Whispers"? Never heard of it. Oh well, back to the internet!!!!!

Marg - By Jove! I think you've got it! Checked with the internet, that's it. It's alot of fun but I don't know how it would here. Do you think it would? With everyone's sense of humor I'm sure there would be some wild tales surface...it's making me laugh already.

Would like opinion on this...how would you feel about a challenge as follows: Think of a saying, a thought (decent and appropriate) draw a picture to depict it? Yes, No, Maybe? Comment. I might be mentioning this without giving it more thought.

37. 1 Apr 2009 06:37

marg

Not sure how you could pass it on from word to ear, though ? hang on.. how about if you had to send the message via a drawing ?

38. 1 Apr 2009 06:38

marg

wahh.. we crossed lines there and both came up with the same idea !

Really Marg, you really think it is good, you aren't just saying that? I love to write but my vocabulary and knowledge of the world limits me. For example I will have to look up the word supercilious, I think you were the one to use it. I have read so few stories so that doesn't help. I read non-fiction for the most part but I have just started to read fiction so that should help me a lot.

Sounds good to me. We'll get our heads together and throw out a starting picture or sentence to draw from. I don't this will be too easy but fun nonetheless. Thanks!
