I guess that is one of the reasons I created this topic in the forums called "The Doldrums" it's just a way of getting some stuff of my chest and it also lets others share their views.

Just a note to say that while there are some on TD that are very competitive, and some that simply have a wonderful God given talent, there are also those who genuinely care about the well-being of our fellow contributors. I would encourage you to continue to draw ( you are certainly talented!) and as you do so, try to focus on the pleasure you get from your creations. As you comment and encourage others with their efforts, they will in return respond to yours.
I hope all is going well with your efforts to improve your health. That in itself deserves a Top 5! All the best, Steve!

This was not meant to say that talented and competitive people are not also caring people!

Welcome to 2013 everyone, new year, new goals first and paramount is my quest for work. I have been unable to work for almost ten years due to poor health. Now that has all changed and I find myself fit, able and motivated in one of the unhealthiest job markets ever... talk about timing issues (LOL). I have some ideas and the backing of my local job center who I might add are very encouraging and have offered to assist me in licensing for a number of possible jobs including taxi driving or security work. Although competent in the office with computers and such the competition is too high with far to many kids fully loaded with degrees under their belts for me to even get past the CV stage. So first things first get employed then improve my options. My weight has remained stable for months and even stayed put over Christmas. Which I spent with my lovely daughter for the first time. She stayed with me for two weeks and it was amazing and wonderful having her with me. So I feel very positive at the moment and feel that there are going to be some big changes in 2013 for the better. I do hope that you all have positive experiences too over the next year and beyond. I will get around to doing a few more pictures sometimes when inspiration takes me, sorry if I have not been as productive as I was in the past but I have been preoccupied. Take care everyone x Stephen

Hiya, Stephen, and a very happy New Year 2013 !

I admire your strength and positive attitude almost as much as I admire your brilliant pictures - so hopefully, very soon, you'll find time to draw again.

I was just thinking about job options - (and trying to keep the weight from increasing - and I was wondering whether, with your love of history and explaining things to people, you might think about doing some volunteer work as a local tourist guide, or in the information centre, while you're looking around for paid employment ?

I think that one of the problems with being out of the workforce for a time, is proving to people that you can actually do a steady job, which doing a regular volunteer job can show.

Another, however, is making sure that you make time for yourself, rather than spending every minute checking for new jobs/writing applications that no-one ever reads/worrying that you'll never get another job, etc., and I think that having some volunteer work that you really like doing takes your mind off all that and gives you the 'I've got a life' feeling that you need.

Just my thoughts, buddy - and please draw a picture of the harbour or castle asap !

Tough times I must have applied for nearly seventy plus jobs through various web sites online with no success. Last night I received notice of a job in my old industry, shipping and forwarding in Dover. I applied to the company immediately also I spoke with them in this morning and an old colleague of mine answered the phone who recognised me and now I have a job interview on Monday 26th May. I have been out of work for ten years for varying reasons and actively job hunting since August 2012 so I have high hopes, fingers crossed I have up until now never actually failed a job interview. So shirt and tie and my best behaviour Monday lol

I don't know what on earth is wrong with me laughing Monday the 29th of April 2013 is the actual date of my job interview. I can not believe that I reported the date to you people wrong twice in a row. That is how flustered I am ha ha. But I am preparing and I am confident and I have a really good feeling that this might be my chance to get back in the saddle so to speak. Thank you Clo and polly for your comments and if I am successful I promise to let you know right here.
